Algo-Heuristic Theory
Algo-
heuristic theory, otherwise known as Landamatics, identifies the observable but
focuses on the un-observable cognitive processes and their unconscious cognitive
operations, including learning how to explain them algorithmically as well as
heuristically. It also is a method that formulates instructional tools to
expand upon cognitive processes faster (Reigeluth, C., Masulis, A., 1983). This theory is one of the oldest of its kind
nestled under constructivism model.
Constructivism
suggests that the learners understanding of knowledge is attained from a
explanation and creation search in which
learners cognitive process constructs individual
interpretations of an experiences (Harasim, L.,
2012). These constructions produce knowledge that corresponds to external
reality but may have little realism.
The
principals of algo-heuristic theory are simple. The first being that the discovery
of a process is much more important than giving students the formula for which
to complete an assignment or activity or even individualized instruction. Continuing
with the idea that processes can also be taught through instruction and demonstrations of
operations as well, it is just important to teach through algorithmic and/or
heuristic problem solving.
An instructional example would be
1. Present the procedure to the student and demonstrate problem solving.
2. Develop the first operation.
3. Present a problem that requires the first operation and practice that operation.
4. Develop the second operation.
5. Present a problem that requires application of both operation and practice.
6. Develop the third operation.
7. Present a problem that represents all three problems.
8. Proceed until all problems are mastered.
